Product Recommendation Quiz for Digital Product Catalogs

Quizzerfy · · 5 min read

A product recommendation quiz asks a visitor a few questions, then sends them to the one product in your catalog that fits. It replaces a shop page full of choices with one pick and a checkout link.

Why do visitors freeze in front of your catalog?

You have an ebook and a course, and now a template pack. On your store they sit side by side with similar titles and different prices. To you the differences are obvious. A new visitor has to work them out alone, and they cannot tell which one to start with.

So they email you to ask, or they leave. Many of your messages may start with the same line, asking which product to buy.

What does that cost you over time?

Each confused visitor is a sale that was yours to lose. A buyer can pick the wrong product and ask for a refund. A visitor who leaves may forget about you. Meanwhile you keep answering the same question by hand.

How would a good seller handle this?

Say you sell presets in a shop and a visitor walks in and asks what to buy. You would not hand them the full catalog. You would ask what they shoot, what they edit in, and what look they are after. Then you would point to one pack and explain why.

That short conversation is the whole idea of a recommendation quiz. It asks what a good seller would ask, and it answers the same way each time, at any hour.

What changes when the visitor gets one pick?

The choice gets smaller. Instead of comparing five items, the visitor weighs one yes or no on something chosen for them. And they know why, because the result page explains the match using their own answers.

You also learn something useful: which questions your visitors answer and where they land. That tells you which products your audience is really after.

How do you build a product recommendation quiz?

Use these steps.

  1. List the products. Include only what you want to sell now, and make each one a separate outcome.
  2. Write who each one is for. One line per product, covering stage, goal and budget.
  3. Find what separates them. Those differences are your questions.
  4. Decide on routing. Use answers for a clean split, or scoring when a few signals add up.
  5. Write each outcome page. Explain the match, show the price, and give one button.
  6. Add a lead form. Ask before or after the pick.

Here is how three separators can route a small catalog.

Separator Sample question What it decides
Stage Where are you with this right now? Starter or advanced product
Learning style Do you like to read, watch or do? Ebook, course or template
Budget What are you happy to spend today? Single product or bundle

Handle budget with respect. You want the visitor to find a fit, not to feel judged, so write those options in neutral language.

Which template should you start from?

Quizzerfy has three recommender templates:

  • Product Finder: sends each visitor to one product that fits their stage, learning style and budget. It suits creators selling three or more products.
  • Preset Pack Picker: picks the right pack for what a visitor makes and edits in, shows it right away, and asks for an email after. It suits sellers of presets, LUTs, fonts and design kits.
  • Fitness Plan Match: matches a visitor to one of four plans by goal, setup and habits, and sends anyone with a health concern to a doctor first.

If you sell only one product, you want a fit check instead. See quiz funnel examples for how to tell them apart.

How does the recommendation reach checkout?

Each outcome has its own button to any checkout URL. That can be Gumroad, Stan, Kajabi, Lemon Squeezy, Payhip or your own. The link keeps your UTM tags and carries the visitor’s outcome and answers. Each result can also show its own price, bullets and an optional discount.

If you plan to run several product quizzes, note the plan limits. Pro has 10 live quizzes, and Ultra has unlimited live quizzes, 5 custom domains and 3 seats. Details are in the pricing section. Leads are unlimited on all of them.

What should happen when no product fits?

Plan for it, because it will happen. Some visitors will not suit anything you sell today. A recommender that forces every person onto a product loses its credibility, and you may earn a refund request as well.

Give those visitors an honest result. Tell them what would suit them better right now, and offer something free that moves them forward. Then invite them to stay on your list.

That group is also useful research. If the same answers keep landing people on your no-fit result, you may have found your next product. Read the top answers now and then, since they show what your audience is asking for in its own words.

The same applies when two products both fit. Pick one, and mention the other as the next step. A single clear answer is the reason the visitor took the quiz.

Your outcome pages do the selling here, so read how to build a quiz results page. If your catalog is mostly digital downloads, how to sell digital products puts the quiz in context.
